Christmas Wreath Extravaganza

The wonderful wreath workshops arrived at Painshill this November/ December; full of foliage, fun, pinecones and winter berries. The festive magic allowed our visitors’ creativity to flow whilst learning to make stunning Christmas wreaths to upgrade their front doors or internal decor!

Running across three days, the workshops were created and hosted by the expert crafter, gardener, designer and maker, Renée Canter, The girl who gardens. The workshop attendees learnt step by step, using garden-fresh holly, ivy, and vibrant red berries how to create a festive masterpiece.

Learning how to add foliage, berries and seed heads to create beautiful Christmas wreaths using sustainably foraged materials from Painshill. Bringing the colours and textures of winter to your front door is a tradition that is centuries old.

Renée gave us some really helpful tips for keeping the evergreen wreaths healthy once completed:

It is best to keep your wreath in the cool outdoors.
Before hanging, spritz your wreath base well.
Feel of the wreath base every week to see if it needs spritzing again.
Compost as much of your wreath as possible, You can reuse the base again and again.

Whether you’re an enthusiastic beginner or a floristry professional and looking for new inspiration, keep an eye out for our up and coming crafty workshops.

A Christmas gift for The Hermitage

The Hermitage gets a new hat!

A rustic cottage in a secluded spot on the western side of the landscape, not every visitor finds the Hermitage.

However, those who do stumble across it on their Painshill travels are rewarded with the most magical sight. Perched in the perfect position, the windows offer wonderful views of the Surrey hills for miles into the distance.

Photo: Before the re-thatching begins

This small but perfectly formed thatched building provides visitors with a glimpse of life as an 18th century hermit. Hermits were often hired by landowners to reside in their gardens and to live a simple life. The idea was that hermits should remain in the grounds and spend time in silence praying for the family. Legend has it Hamilton’s Painshill hermit did not last long in the role. After just three weeks he was spotted drinking in the local inn!

When Painshill was a lost landscape, the Hermitage became derelict and was chopped up for firewood in the 1940s. The Painshill Park Trust landscape team rebuilt it, using timber from the grounds, in May 2004. However, thatched roofs do not last forever and recently, the Hermitage has needed a new hat!

With huge gratitude to donors, a recent fundraising appeal achieved the £10,000 needed to rethatch the Hermitage roof. Our landscape team at Painshill along with dedicated craftsmen, full of expertise, began the task of re-thatching the new roof, where the old roof was carefully removed and the new roof was constructed.

The Hermitage is looking spectacular, just in time for winter visitors.

During the re-thatching, we were able to interview Chris, the Master Thatcher, about this specialist skill and the process of the new roof…

As a small independent charity, we are incredibly grateful to each of the donors who made this vital project possible. This has allowed the Hermitage to continue to be a vital part of Painshill’s history and a special time for the new roof to be installed just before Christmas.

Don’t forget to wear your woolly hats too if you fancy a festive walk this Christmas season to the Hermitage.

5 things to enjoy at Painshill in December

It is officially December; gloves, hats and scarves you must remember!

The frosty, low mist mornings are settling in and this is a perfect time to enjoy the festive season. Take a walk within the winter landscape and crunch along the ground of fallen leaves across a crystal glaze of frost.

1. A Christmas gift for The Hermitage

The Hermitage, set within the woodland at the western end of the park, is somewhat a mystical story and history, dating back to the mid-eighteenth century.

Amongst the other follies at Painshill, the Hermitage is an important feature within the landscape. Views from the Hermitage open out into the countryside, and the Surrey Hills beyond. This is a perfect trip for the festive winter season. Wrap up with some winter warmers and set off the visit this fine example of 18th century taste and fashion.

After being restored in 2004 to its natural form, time has since passed and the roof of the Hermitage was again in need of being re-thatched. Our magical team at Painshill along with dedicated craftsmen, full of expertise, began the task of re-thatching the new roof.

We are thrilled to announce, on the 1st December, the Hermitage is now open along with an early Christmas present of a newly thatched roof.
