Membership Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs

For general questions about Painshill, please see our FAQs page.

How do I become a member?

Memberships are available for purchase online, in person at the Visitor Centre, or by calling 01932 868 113.

How much does membership cost?

We have three levels of membership available for purchase – Individual (£65) Joint (£80) and Family (£95).

Can I pay monthly?

No sorry. All of our memberships are paid for annually.

When does my membership start from and expire?

Your membership is valid for 1 year from the date you purchased it. Gift memberships will last for 1 year from the day the recipient activates the gift. Please contact us if you like to start your membership from a particular date prior to purchase.

Can I Gift Aid a membership?

You are able to Gift Aid on your membership if you are buying it for yourself and are a UK tax payer. This is not possible if you are buying it on behalf of a friend, or as a gift.

I am a person with a disability and need a carer to assist me with my visit. What do you recommend?

An essential carer accompanying a member with disabilities is able to gain access to our gardens without being included in a membership. You may purchase any level of membership and visit our gardens with your personal carer.

Do you have a Lifetime membership?

Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have a Lifetime membership available although we are looking into this. Please call 01932 868 113 or email membership@painshill.co.uk to register your interest.

What are the entry allowances with each type of membership?

An Individual Membership allows just the named member entry.

A Joint Membership allows two adults entry.

A Family Membership allows two adults and up to four children aged 5-16 (children under 5 are free with all memberships).

If there are two names on either a Joint of Family membership, you can either both come in together OR one of you can come with a guest.

Can I change the name(s) on my membership after purchase?

You may change the name(s) on your membership at the time of renewal. If you just joined and wish to change the name(s) on your card, you must return all of your current membership cards to be issued cards with the new name(s).

Can I upgrade to a higher level of membership?

Yes. If you wish to upgrade you will be asked to pay the difference between the membership types. You will be given all benefits of the membership you have upgraded to. We will only extend your membership a full year from its current expiration date if you have upgraded within 1 month prior to your renewal date.

Can I downgrade to a different membership type?

The option to downgrade your membership type is available at your time of renewal.

Direct Debits

Can I sign up by Direct Debit?

Yes. As an added benefit, if you sign up by Direct Debit you can save £10 on the membership type.

Will a Direct Debit automatically renew?

After the initial term of one year, direct debit memberships will continue on a rolling basis until you cancel your membership with Painshill. You will get a letter every year to remind you before the Direct Debit is taken.

The payment card that will have the direct debit set up against it must match the address of the membership.

Your payment will be collected up to 7 days prior to your expiry date.

If your details need changing or you wish to cancel, please let us know at least 10 working days before your payment date is due. Membership cancellation after the collection date will involve an admin fee of 20% of the full membership cost.

Membership Cards

How many membership cards are issued per membership?

Only one card will be issued, per membership.

How many names can be put on my membership card?

If you purchase Individual membership, only one name will be printed on the card. For Joint & Family membership, two names (one primary card holder & a secondary named person) will be printed on the card(s). The two adults do not need to live at the same address but one named person must be present at time of visit. To make any name amendments or additions, please contact us.

Do the primary and secondary cardholders need to live in the same household?

The 2 cardholders do not need to live in the same household, but the benefits of being a Painshill member extend to only those 2-named cardholders. Please keep in mind that all membership correspondence and mailings will be sent only to the primary cardholder.

What if I forget to bring my membership card when I come to visit Painshill?

Please try to remember your card, however, in the event that you do forget to bring it with you, please speak to the manager in the Visitor Centre and they will be able to look up your membership status.

What if my card is lost, stolen or defaced?

We will replace the card for an administration cost of £5.00. This can be processed at either the Visitor Centre or by contacting the Membership Team on membership@painshill.co.uk

Gift Memberships

Can a membership be purchased as a gift?

Memberships make ideal gifts; these can be bought online, at the Visitor Centre or by contacting the Membership Team on membership@painshill.co.uk

When does a gift membership start?

Rather than starting on the day of purchase a gift membership starts from the day the recipient activates it. This is to ensure that the recipient of the gift gets a full year of the benefits.

I have been given a Painshill membership – how do I activate it?

To activate the membership contact the team on membership@painshill.co.uk

Things to See & Do

Painshill is an award-winning 18th century landscape garden where you are invited to walk around a work of art. Winding paths will take you on a journey to discover a living canvas with beautiful vistas and dramatically placed garden buildings. Stroll around the Serpentine Lake, wander through woodland and promenade past follies, including the Ruined Abbey, Gothic Temple and Turkish Tent.
