This talk looks at the paintings and drawings completed by the Venetian artist Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768), known as Canaletto, during his extended stay in Britain between 1746 and 1755. Many of his subjects were situated on or near the Thames, and they tell us a great deal about the society and the landscape of the mid eighteenth century.
Nick Pollard is Curator of Spelthorne Museum in Staines and Chairman of Sunbury and Shepperton History Society, and has a lifelong interest in the history of the Thames.
