This walk isn’t really about learning lists of tree names, facts or figures. It’s about learning how to read a tree.
- Why has it grown that way?
- What has happened to it during its lifetime?
- How has it responded to damage, competition, drought, gravity or changing conditions?
Using the beautiful trees of Painshill, this walk will explore how trees are so much more than static, inanimate objects. They are living organisms, constantly growing, adapting and responding to the environment around them.
Girl in a Tree is a tree care company founded by Bianca and Alasdair, built around a simple idea: if people understand and care about their trees, they are far more likely to look after them well.
They are advocates for trees first and foremost. Their approach grew from a frustration with an industry that can sometimes focus more on managing trees than understanding them, and from a belief that good tree care should revolve around knowledge, restraint, and respect. That curiosity has taken them into the canopies of some of the most extraordinary trees, including the old-growth giant sequoias in California, where they work alongside researchers studying some of the world’s largest trees, and they continue to collaborate with them to better understand how these amazing trees function, adapt and survive fire and drought.
Alongside practical tree work, Girl in a Tree is increasingly exploring how they can help people form a deeper relationship with trees — through education, canopy access and our developing work in green prescribing. By taking people beyond simply being around trees and into the canopy itself, they hope to help people feel more connected — to themselves, to trees, and to the world around them. Because ultimately, Girl in a Tree believe that when people learn to really see trees, they begin to value them differently.
