A Celebration of Trees at Painshill.

This autumn, we invite you to hear the incredible stories of our ancient and significant trees — and to witness their spectacular seasonal colour.

Painshill’s extraordinary journey is rooted in its trees, from Charles Hamilton’s original vision of “painting with trees” to the mature and dramatic Grade I listed landscape we enjoy today.

Visit this season to discover how our trees are living reminders of the 18th century, standing as silent witnesses to centuries of history. Learn how they support biodiversity, enrich our landscape and soothe our minds as we spend time beneath their canopies.

Between 5 September and 1 November, we’ll be sharing the stories of our magnificent trees through a series of walks, talks, activities and special events — offering visitors of all ages the opportunity to take inspiration from Painshill’s arboreal treasures.

This autumn, there’s something you should hear about our tremendous trees.

Today, you can still experience more than 100 trees planted by Charles Hamilton himself. These include the remarkable Great Cedar — now the largest multi-stemmed cedar in Europe — a Cork Oak believed to be amongst the oldest in the UK, and a number of North American species introduced to Britain through an innovative 18th-century seed-purchasing scheme. Hamilton also skilfully incorporated existing trees into his design, including the ancient oak that still stands today, estimated to be at least 450 years old.

Available for a small donation

Created especially for younger visitors, our Autumn Activity Book is filled with fascinating tree facts and creative activities for families to enjoy during their visit.

For adults, our beautifully illustrated Tree Guide highlights a number of Painshill’s most significant trees, accompanied by elegant line drawings.
