Dating from Tudor times, this tree is believed to be one of the oldest at Painshill. It is known as the ‘Heart of Oak’ due to the heart-shaped hollow in the centre of its trunk. Ancient oaks are vital homes to a wide range of biodiversity, supporting more species than any other native tree and with the potential to host over 2,300 species of birds, mammals, fungi and invertebrates.
