Planted in the 18th century when Charles Hamilton was designing Painshill, the Swamp Cypress is unusual as, unlike most conifers, it is deciduous. Before releasing its soft, feathery needles to nature, in autumn the tree puts on a spectacular display of russet-red colours. The Swam Cypress is native to the Southeastern United States of America, thriving in wet conditions. The tree forms distinctive aerial roots called ‘knees’ that provide oxygen to submerged roots and their rot-resistant wood makes them valuable for construction.
