Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata)

Location: Elysian Plain

Shagbark Hickory is so called as its trunk takes on a shaggy, characterful texture as it grows older. Originating from North America, it is one of many non-native trees that provide stunning autumn colour at Painshill. The tree’s wood is strong and shock-resistant, and is used to make baseball bats and drumsticks. It produces nuts closely related to pecans which are enjoyed by humans and wildlife alike.
