Great Cedar (Cedrus libani)

Location: The North Bank, opposite Grotto Island

This magnificent tree is believed to be the tallest multi-stemmed cedar tree in Europe. Originating from the mountainous regions of Syria, Turkey and Lebanon, the Great Cedar was planted at Painshill by Charles Hamilton to draw the eye of the visitor and create a dramatic moment in a view. In 2022 it was chosen as part of a nationwide network of 70 Ancient Trees that were dedicated to the late Queen in celebration of her Platinum Jubilee.
