A mill has existed in Cobham at least since Doomsday, todays is a picturesque early 19th century mill on the river Mole near at the end of Cobham High Street beyond the Bear Pub. It is Grade II listed and is the only surviving fully working watermill in Surrey. It was originally part of a much larger mill complex that once stood alongside. Last used in the 1920’s to grind corn, after various other uses, abandoned, vandalised, and allowed to fall into disrepair for decades, the mill has been restored and brought back to life in the 1990’s. What remained of the original machinery recovered, carefully restored and reassembled, and some replacement parts manufactured, the milling of corn can once again be demonstrated.

Find out how Cobham Conversation Trust set about restoring it and how it is maintained today, this is more than big meccano!

The team explain the history in more detail, but also about the role Corn in British history, the implications on modern life and why graded grains was much before Homepride adverts! Ah and if you thought process food was a recent phenomenon, find out how it started!

Location: The Abercorn Room at Painshill

Organised in aid of Painshill Park Trust Limited, registered charity in England and Wales (284944). We rely on fundraising to preserve and maintain Painshill for future generations so your support is very important to us.
