Black tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica)

Location: Lake Edge Chinese Peninsular

Originating from the North American East and parts of Mexico, the Black Tupelo displays extraordinary colours in autumn when its foliage turns purple and then scarlet red. The tree also produces small blackish-blue fruits which are enjoyed by wildlife. They have a sour taste, giving the tree its common name, Sour Gum. Nyssa trees prefer damp, moist soil, and also woodland settings – leading to their scientific name: Nyssa was a Greek water nymph, and in Latin sylvatica means ‘of the woodland’.
