This American maple is noted for its striking display of autumn colour, producing vivid red foliage just before leaf fall. Among the most colourful of the maple species, it creates a dramatic seasonal highlight in the landscape prior to winter. It is highly adaptable, thriving in a variety of conditions from dry soils to swamps and boggy ground—hence its alternative name, the swamp maple. A fast-growing tree, it can reach heights of up to 100 feet, though it is relatively short-lived, with a typical lifespan of less than 100 years.
