Amongst the largest trees at Painshill, London Planes were introduced to the UK in the 17th century. They are hybrids of the Oriental Plane and American Plane. London Planes became popular in cities in the Victorian period as their bark absorbs pollution, which the tree then sheds. They are still often planted along roads and in urban settings. The London Planes at Painshill pre-date Charles Hamilton and were incorporated into his design scheme.
