Unique and Rare Opportunity – Head of Estates & Landscape, Painshill Park, Surrey

Are you passionate about 18th century landscape gardens, horticulture and architecture?

A rare and unique opportunity has become available for a Head of Estates and Landscape to be responsible for the care, restoration and development of a Grade I listed 18th century landscape garden of international renown which attracts 200,000 visitors a year.

Painshill is regarded as one of the foremost and finest examples of the English Landscape Movement.  Created by the Hon. Charles Hamilton as a living painting, Painshill invites the visitor to walk around a work of art to discover the landscape in 160 acres of dramatic follies, calming waters and stunning views. 

This is an exciting time to join the Painshill team and will give the right candidate the chance to take their career to the next level.  As Head of Estates and Landscape you will manage the garden to ensure it is maintained and developed to the highest horticultural standards in accordance with the masterplan and conservation management plan as agreed. As part of the property team, the post holder will promote the visitor experience within the gardens.

The successful candidate will be an excellent collaborator / leader as this involves line management responsibilities for the supervision and training of staff, students and volunteers. The candidate will be expected to take the lead with administrative responsibilities such as keeping up to date records on Health and Safety, machinery records, plant data base information, training records, COSHH assessments and relevant other records for the effective management of the estate. They will also enjoy a hands-on approach with the team and be confident in giving presentations and talks to groups.

Applicants should have a National Diploma, NDH or HND in Amenity Horticulture or NVQ Level 2/3 (or equivalent) as well as practical gardening/horticultural experience. An understanding of the importance in maintaining and developing a historic garden and commitment to climate-conscious and sustainable gardening is important.

A lovely 3-bedroom grade I listed cottage within the grounds is provided as part of the package for the successful applicant at a reduced rental fee. Partners, children and pets are welcome.

SALARY:  £38,000 – £42,000 depending on experience plus accommodation
