What are your opening times? 

Our opening times change between summer and winter. Please take a look at our opening times page for the latest information.

Are you open over Christmas and New Year?

We are closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day but open every other day of the year.

When can we see the Crystal Grotto?

We cannot guarantee all the follies will be open daily. The Crystal Grotto requires maintenance once a week and is sometimes closed for photography shoots, events or to ensure social distancing. Please check the opening times before you book. 

Are you open during national lockdowns?

We are often allowed to remain open in lockdown situations but there will be changes to our services and opening times. Please see our visit us page for up-to-date information on the changing COVID-19 situation.

Do you need to buy a ticket to visit? 

Yes, Painshill is a ticketed garden attraction. Entry includes access to the gardens for one day and all proceeds go towards the protection and upkeep of the historic landscape. We highly recommend buying tickets online in advance.

Is there an historic house?

Painshill is a garden attraction with 158 acres of landscape to enjoy. The house that used to be attached to the estate is private property and is not part of the visit. 

Are you part of the National Trust? 

We are not part of the National Trust, English Heritage, RHS or any other similar organisation. Painshill is an independent charity with our own tickets and membership scheme. 

Who can buy a concession ticket?

Our concessions ticket is for those over 60, students, members of the military and those working for the NHS. 

I need to change or amend my tickets – can I do this? 

All tickets are non-refundable. We try to exchange tickets for a different day if we can. However we cannot guarantee that this is always possible. If you would like to exchange your tickets please contact us with your booking ref number.

Will you be closed in bad weather? 

Painshill will only close if the weather is dangerous to our visitors, volunteers and staff. This could include snow and ice, flooding or very high winds. Rain or light wind will not be considered a reason to close, cancel an event or refund tickets. 

How long does it take to walk around the landscape?

The historic route around the park is around 3 miles long. You will need about 2 hours to see everything. Shorter routes are available or you can bring along a picnic and stay longer.  

Are dogs allowed in the garden? 

Yes, dogs are welcome but must remain on a short lead at all times on the designated paths. Dogs are also welcome in the Tea room on a short lead, but only during ordering or collection of food and drink.

Please be a responsible owner and clear up after your dog. Waste bins are provided along the designated paths.

Please ensure your dog doesn’t run up to other people – especially children.

Please do not leave dogs unattended at any time, including in the visitor car park.

Painshill reserves the right to refuse entry to, or remove, any dog thought to be dangerous to visitors, staff, wildlife or other dogs.

Am I allowed to cycle around the landscape?

Bikes and scooters are only allowed for the under 5s. 

Can we bring in a picnic?

Yes picnics are very welcome. You can bring in chairs and blankets however please do not bring gazebos.

Is everything at Painshill accessible? 

There is an accessible route around Painshill that allows the visitor to see many features of the landscape. There are areas to the west however that are grassy or include steep slopes. The Visitor Centre, Tea Room and toilets are accessible. Download our accessible map for more information. 

Can I take photos at Painshill?

Informal non-commercial photography with a handheld camera or phone is allowed. To use Painshill for commercial photography, or a non-commercial photoshoot (such as a student project, pre-wedding or family photoshoot), or to bring in specialist equipment like tripods, props or drones you must apply for a license from the Painshill Park Trust.

Please note: we are unlikely to grant permission to fly drones for amateur or student filming or to approve requests from users who seek permission in return for access to use the drone footage obtained.

Can I get married at Painshill?

Yes, the Painshill Park Trust runs ceremonies in the landscape over the summer months. 

Can I fish at Painshill?

Fishing at Painshill is controlled by Walton Angling Society. You must be a member of their society to fish on site. Please contact them directly for prices and more information.

Painshill is an award-winning 18th century landscape garden where you are invited to walk around a work of art. Winding paths will take you on a journey to discover a living canvas with beautiful vistas and dramatically placed garden buildings. Stroll around the Serpentine Lake, wander through woodland and promenade past follies, including the Ruined Abbey, Gothic Temple and Turkish Tent.
