Brooklands Museum, the original home of British motorsport and aviation, is a living experience on the site of the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit and most prolific aircraft factory of the 20th Century. Celebrating over 100 years of innovation, the Museum tells the stories of the famous pioneering men and women that shaped the world of motoring and aviation including Barnes Wallis, Tommy Sopwith and Harry Hawker, as well as Malcolm Campbell and John Cobb.
John Carter’s talk will cover the history of the racing circuit and aircraft factories with interesting facts and figures, with a focus on the development of Concorde, and the part Brooklands played in it.
Speaker – John Carter
John is a senior member of the Brooklands Concorde Volunteer team.
He started as a volunteer at Brooklands on his semi-retirement in 2011 as a general museum steward and joined the Concorde team after a couple of years. He has since become one of the most experienced stewards on the Concorde team, involving training new stewards, speaking at Concorde Signature events, and being one of only five volunteers licensed to operate the Concorde simulator, the original simulator on which all Concorde pilots and flight engineers were trained and which is at Brooklands where it can be flown by members of the public.
John’s interest in aviation started at an early age in the Air Training Corps, where he obtained his gliding wings at the age of 16. This sowed the seeds for a lifetime of interest in aviation. Although he has held a private pilots licence for over 30 years, his career was in insurance and risk management consultancy and he spent nearly forty years travelling the world advising major companies.
