‘The Deepdene’ Abercorn Room talk led by Peter Sturge
Presenting the colourful history of the Deepdene at Dorking, this illustrated talk introduces gardens described in 1673 as “so ravishing that I can never expect any enjoyment beyond it, but in the Kingdom of Heaven”. Yet the story unfolds to encompass the birth of “interior design”, a ‘cursed’ diamond, the squandering of wealth and ultimate decline of the great estate in modern times.
Peter Sturge is one of Dorking Museum’s volunteer guides for the Deepdene Trail.
Talks in the Abercorn Room occur on the first Thursday of every month. View all upcoming talks, guided tours and lectures here.
Organised in aid of Painshill Park Trust Limited, registered charity in England and Wales (284944). We rely on fundraising to preserve and maintain Painshill for future generations so your support is very important to us.
