PAINSHILL PARK AND BEYOND:
The Future of 18th Century
Landscape Restoration

Painshill Park Trust marks its 30th anniversary in 2010.

This is also a time when the issue of interpreting 18th Century landscape restoration/reconstruction is a hotly debated topic.

Painshill Park is bringing together key players in the debate to a major conference, using Painshill’s award winning restoration as a model for past and present approaches, and discussing new ways of looking at landscapes in the future.

Day 1 will consider the restoration of 18th century landscapes to date, from general approaches to the specific case of Painshill Park and its context in garden history.  This will include papers on the practical management and maintenance of historic landscapes, as well as academic and design issues.

In the afternoon delegates will be given a guided tour of Painshill Park.

Day 2 will start to look at other approaches and issues which could be considered in restoration programmes, and the search for authenticity.  These will include the social and leisure uses of gardens in their time, a consideration of climate and weather through the publication of Gardeners' Kalendars, and the use of plant history as a means of demonstrating authenticity in planting designs.

This will be followed by a debate of the issues, and a consideration of future approaches to the process of 18th century garden restoration.  The debate will be led by Mark Laird and John Phibbs, and will involve all the conference speakers as well as the delegates.

Chairman: Dr Patrick Eyres (New Arcadian Press)
Speakers will include:
Mavis Batey (Garden History Society)
Mike Calnan (National Trust)
Mark Laird (Harvard University and Painshill Park Consultant)
John Phibbs (Dubois)
Michael Symes (Garden Historian, Author and Lecturer)
Janie Burford (Council Member, Painshill Park Trust)
Kate Felus (Historic Landscapes)
Brent Elliott (Royal Horticultural Society)

Cost to delegates:  £100 for the two days including refreshments and lunches (there will be a limited number of places at a reduced fee for students)
