The crystal Grotto opens

Painshill is delighted to announce that the fully restored crystal Grotto will be open to visitors at weekends (1pm – 4pm) from June 29th 2013.* Modern day visitors will now be able to experience the full visual and emotional impact of the magical Grotto for the first time.

From July 2013, our pre-booked Historic Tour for adult groups (10+) will also feature the fully restored crystal Grotto. Experience the dazzling stalactites and discover why this sparkling centrepiece, within the stunning landscape garden created by the Honourable Charles Hamilton, is such an important historic folly.

Hundreds of thousands of crystals including calcite, gypsum, quartz, and fluorite have been used to re-create this extraordinary folly, which dates back to 1760. Restoration of the crystal Grotto has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and other donations by private trusts. It is one of the last follies to be restored within the landscape garden created by the Hon. Charles Hamilton in the Georgian Age of Enlightenment.
