The Serpentine Lake is a central feature and a great breeding site for toads and frogs. It also contains a wide variety of fish including carp, bream, roach and pike. The lake at Painshill is an important resource and is regularly used for pond dipping by visiting schools.
Many different species of birds have been identified at Painshill and it has become a release site for rescued birds. The British Ornithology Trust visit the 18th century landscape garden each month to carry out a wetland bird survey.
